Medicare Supplements also known as "Medigap" helps fill in the gaps in Original Medicare by covering out-of-pocket costs that are left over. Original Medicare, Part A & B, covers a lot of your healthcare expenses, but it does NOT cover everything. Medigap plans are offered by private insurance companies that help pay for the hospital & medical costs that Original Medicare does not cover such as copayments, coinsurance, and annual deductibles. Please note that Medigap plans are NOT the same as Medicare Advantage plans and do not provide coverage for prescription drugs, vision, or dental. Explore further details about Medigap plans in the section below.
Upon reaching the age of 65 it is very common to assume that Medicare will comprehensively cover all medical expenses during your retirement. While Medicare does cover a significant portion of medical costs, it does NOT cover everything. Medicare has a substantial Part A deductible and typically only covers 80% of outpatients and doctor bills. For instance, let's say you encounter a $15,000 ambulance bill after you pay your annual Medicare Part B deductible. Your Medicare Part B coverage will pay 80% of the bill. If you enrolled in a Medigap plan that includes coverage for Part B copayments and coinsurance, it would cover the remaining 20% coinsurance of the $15,000 ambulance bill. Some Medigap plans will offer coverage for the Part B deductible.
Medigap plans do NOT have any network restrictions, allowing beneficiaries to receive care from any provider or hospital that accepts Medicare. Additionally, beneficiaries do NOT need to reside in a specific area for their Medigap plans to cover their services. Since Medigap plans offer nationwide coverage, they can be highly beneficial for beneficiaries who travel frequently or spend extended periods away from their primary residence.
During your Medicare Open Enrollment Period, you have the freedom to select any Medigap plan without the risk of being denied coverage. However, if you have been enrolled for more than six months, changing plans would require going through medical underwriting.
It's important to understand that Medigap plans are not as expensive as people may think. While there are premiums associated with your Medigap plan, in addition to your Medicare Part B premium, you will likely notice reduced premium compared to what you have paid for insurance in the past.
